The box promises a fifteen minute install and one screwdriver. On a door hung in 1988 that promise rests on something nobody checked: that the leaf still hangs where it hung, and that the bolt still arrives in the middle of its pocket. In this valley that assumption is the whole problem. A wide solid entry door on three hinges lives through July afternoons that run past a hundred in a heat wave and January mornings tens of degrees below them, every year, for decades. It grows, it shrinks, it settles on its hinges, and the bolt stops landing where it used to.
You already know your own door does this, even if nobody has put it into words. You lift slightly on the handle to get the deadbolt home. You lean a shoulder into the leaf before turning the key. In August you do it without noticing, in February you do not have to do it at all. Your hand has been quietly compensating for years.
A hand can shove a bolt past the lip of a strike. A motor has no such reserve. It pushes, meets resistance it was never designed for, retries, stalls, drains the cells and finally reports a jam. That is why so many smart locks bought online and fitted on a Saturday are in a drawer by October with the brand blamed for it. The brand was rarely the fault. The door was.
So the sequence here is fixed: the door is squared, then the lock goes on, and both happen in one visit. An entry with sidelights gets one extra check, because the narrow frame section beside the glass flexes more than a solid jamb does and a motorized lock weighs more than whatever hung there before.

One rule holds no matter which model you choose: the door keeps a working keyway. Cells go flat, and they pick the morning you are already late. If the model retains a cylinder, that cylinder is pinned to the key already on your ring and the metal key is cut at the van before the visit ends. Setup runs with you at your own door. The app installs on your phone, not on the technician's. You type the first codes in, then add one and remove one with somebody who knows the menus standing beside you, and no door this shop has fitted keeps the installer default.
