Crow Canyon Country Club: a gate at the entrance, a golf course in the middle, and one question that settles half the calls before a van moves

The gated community around the course: an entrance the van has to be cleared through, lanes that look much alike once you are inside, resident doors that belong to residents, and shared gates and entries that belong to everybody at once. Twenty-three minutes to the entrance, plus whatever the gate itself takes.

Twenty-three minutes covers the drive and stops at the gate. What happens next is worth arranging while you are still on the phone: either the entrance has the company name and the technician's name on a list, or somebody meets the van and brings it in. A van standing at a barrier is the most reliable way to lose a quarter of an hour on a job that was going to take twenty minutes. Once inside, the lanes curve and the entries repeat, so the house number matters less than a description of where the door is relative to the course or the nearest turn.

The second thing settled on the call is who is asking. Your own front door, the door from your garage, a gate on your own lot: yours to arrange, and a house lockout there is $145 to $265 with identification shown at the door. The entrance itself, a pedestrian gate in the perimeter, a mail room or a pool building is a different matter, because it serves everyone and a resident cannot instruct changes to it. That request comes from the board or from the management company, and a short written message from either is enough to put the job in motion. This is not caution for its own sake. Work ordered by somebody without the standing to order it gets undone at somebody else's expense, and that conversation is unpleasant for everybody in it.

Two lines are drawn in the same breath. Fobs and remotes for the vehicle gate are issued, logged and cancelled by the community office, so a household needing another one or reporting a lost one goes there, and nobody working for this company will copy a credential that belongs to an association. Our half is mechanical: cylinders, padlocks, the lock in a pedestrian gate, strikes, keepers and the keying scheme that ties them together. Anything electric on a powered gate, the operator, the sensing loop under the asphalt, the run of cable behind the pillar, is a gate contractor's work, and that is said in the first minute of the call rather than after somebody has driven out. If the power is off and the gate has stopped, most operators carry a hand release, and that is the first thing tried.

Inside the walls the weather does what it does everywhere else in this valley. Doors here are large and mostly face open lawn, the swing between winter nights and summer afternoons moves them, and a bolt that dropped cleanly in spring starts catching by midsummer. That is corrected rather than replaced. Beyond it the work is ordinary: repinning at $31 to $49 per cylinder after a sale, replacement hardware at $139 to $359, a keypad at $215 to $529, and keys shut inside a car at the club parking at $115 to $219 with a fob paired for $99 to $215. For the buildings the community shares, master key work and access control carry no printed figure at all, because the count of doors, the state of each frame and the question of who should open what are things somebody has to stand in front of before writing a number.

Say how the van gets past the entrance and whether the gate needs the company name left on a list beforehand. Then say whether the door is your own or one the community shares, because the second kind has to be ordered by the board or the management company. Once inside, a landmark beats a house number on these lanes.

FAQ

Asked about Crow Canyon Country Club

I live here. Can I have the pedestrian gate in the perimeter rekeyed?+

Not on your own say-so, and that is the honest answer rather than a polite one. A gate that serves every household is common property, and changing what is fitted to it needs the board or the management company to ask. A message or an email from either takes a minute and makes the visit straightforward. Anything on your own lot, including your gate and your front door, you can arrange yourself.

The power went out and the vehicle gate will not move. Is that a locksmith call?+

Only in part. Gate operators are built with a hand release for precisely this situation, so that gets found and used before anything else is considered. The electrical side, the motor, the loop and the cabling, sits with the gate contractor and you hear that up front instead of after a twenty-three minute drive. If there is a keyed walk-through gate next to the vehicle one, say so on the call, since it is frequently the fastest way in.

Can we get another gate fob from you?+

No, and nobody offering to sell you one should be trusted with your address. Gate credentials are issued and cancelled by the community office, which is the whole point of them: a fob that can be cloned by an outsider is not access control. The office handles the fob. We handle the mechanical locks on the same property, and the two do not overlap.

Danville and the San Ramon Valley, at any hour. The condition of the door sets the work and the work sets the price, so you get one number on the phone with the $89 service call and the hour already inside it, and that number is what the receipt shows. Ninety days on the labor, in writing, covering the frame as well as the lock.
